Our History

Allegheny traces its origins to 1945 when Charles Auditore, Sr. and a partner established Appalachian Flooring.

Charlie began his career as an apprentice wood mechanic soon after he and his family immigrated to Boston from Sicily. Over the next decade, he rose to the position of crew foreman.

Although he placed a high value on job security, he was determined to strike out on his own.

Thus Appalachian Flooring was born at the end of World War II.

Shortly after Charlie's son and namesake joined Appalachian in the late 1950's, Charlie Sr. purchased his partner's interest in the company and became its sole owner. Initially, Appalachian prospered but, ultimately, increasing competition along with a decreasing demand for wood flooring resulted in severe cash flow problems and Charlie was forced to cease operations in 1963.

Over the years, Charlie had made many friends, including several general contractors who appreciated his work ethic. In 1964, with their financial support, Charlie formed a new company, Allegheny Flooring. By the late 1960's, Allegheny was among the most respected flooring contractors in New England.

Charlie's younger son, Greg, joined the company in 1973 and began to implement new administrative procedures and to expand the company's sales and marketing efforts.

In 1977 Charlie, Sr. sold Allegheny to his two sons and, a year later, Greg took over sole ownership. During the 1980's, Allegheny continued its pattern of sustained growth. By the late 1990's, Allegheny had become the largest and most successful flooring contractor in New England and, in 1999, Greg's elder son, James, joined the company as a trainee in the Estimating Department.

After Greg's untimely death in early 2003, ownership passed to James and his younger brother, Daniel. Today, James and Daniel are carrying on the tradition of family ownership established by their grandfather sixty years ago.
